US-based union-eligible staff
Step 1: Check your eligibility to join a US-based union
You are eligible for the US-based union component of our global union if you are:
- currently working at the Wikimedia Foundation as an Individual Contributor
- not in charge of hiring, firing or management of other employees
- not an Independent Contractor
- based in the United States

Step 2: Sign the Wiki Workers United union authorization card
Please read the Safety note at the top of the card form before completing it.
This card form is very safe to sign. By law, your answers on it are confidential between you, the union and NLRB. The union is not allowed to share your answers with WMF management.
Step 3: Complete the Union Priorities survey
What should Wiki Workers United focus on first? What are your top workplace concerns?
Make your voice heard by completing the Union Priorities survey!
Step 4: Discuss with your colleagues
We have a WMF Slack channel called #global-union, dedicated to discussions about our interest in forming a global union. Please join us there!
Safety note:
- We have confirmed with the WMF People department that all staff should feel comfortable to discuss union-related topics in this channel, as long as these conversations are respectful and do not interfere with work responsibilities. We count on the People department to be true to their word on this.
- The U.S. law protects union-related discussions in spaces where other non-work topics and activities are allowed. Some examples of such spaces are breakrooms, non-work-related slack channels, non-work in-person or virtual social events, etc.
Step 5: Spread the word
You can help us spread the word about Wiki Workers United by:
- telling your colleagues about the #global-union WMF Slack channel
- sharing this website with your friends and colleagues
Step 6: High five!
Thank you for supporting Wiki Workers United!
By signing the union authorization card for US-based employees, you are not only expressing interest in protecting your rights and wellbeing in the workplace, but you are also paving the way to protecting the workplace rights and wellbeing of your international and contractor colleagues, who do not have the opportunity to do so themselves.
This is an act of sharing power in solidarity with our global colleagues. It is also an act of advocating for the Wikimedia movement community: one of the core goals of Wiki Workers United is to improve WMF's transparency and accountability toward the community.
